Were the divorce papers finalized in 70AD?

It’s interesting that there are numerous scriptures where GOD says he divorced Israel because she played the harlot and a adulteress woman. They were given this bill of divorce in the days of Jeremiah in the symbolic form of being given into the hands of the Assyrians. But, did it play out untill 70ad?

Jeremiah 3:8
And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.

A bill of divorce—literally, “a writing of cuttings off.” The plural implies the completeness of the severance.

Ezekiel 16:32
But as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her husband!

We see that this bill of divorce was given to Israel but they as a people never fully realized it. They had blinders on. They were human, so denial was a real emotion after hearing what the Prophets had to say. There is a reason as to why they stoned them and killed them. This marriage covenant that was given a bill of divorce could only be renewed through a death and what they didn’t know at the time, a resurrection. Below I will post as to what this all means.

With that said, look at this from Deuteronomy 24 and Matthew 24. Notice they both come from the same chapters. They almost parallel each other.

Deuteronomy 24:1 When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.

Matthew 24:1-2
And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

This is obviously talking about the Temple being destroyed in 70ad. The covenant would be officially over with the phrase “There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” After the destruction of the Temple, this was it. Jesus was the only way to the Father and the destruction of the Temple was the final signature on this divorce. 70ad would be its final reality check for Israel.

Read what Origen wrote on this divorce being finalized in 70ad. “225AD Origen (On The Significance of A.D. 70) “Therefore he, also, having separated from her, married, so to speak, another, having given into the hands of the former the bill of divorcement; wherefore they can no longer do the things enjoined on them by the law, because of the bill of divorcement. And a sign that she has received the bill of divorcement is this, that Jerusalem was destroyed along with what they called the sanctuary of the things in it which were believed to be holy, and with the altar of burnt offerings, and all the worship associated with it. And a further sign of the bill of divorcement is this, that they cannot keep their feasts, even though according to the letter of the law designedly commanded them, in the place which the Lord God appointed to them for keeping feasts; but there is this also, that the whole synagogue has become unable to stone those who have committed this or that sin; and thousands of things commanded are a sign of the bill of divorcement; and the fact that “there is no more a prophet,” and that they say, “We no longer see signs;”

So is there anything in scripture to confirm this? Now look at the word for “left” in relation to not one stone left upon another stone. This meaning not one stone will not only be standing but they won’t he found. And they weren’t as we know today. The “wall” was never a part of the Temple site, it was Antonia Fortress where Rome was stationed in Jerusalem. So lets get back to this word for left, it’s aphethē (ἀφεθῇ). It can mean “to send away (of a husband divorcing a wife). Well that’s weird right? Maybe the Temple being destroyed was Israels reality check that they had been divorced from their first love. Maybe this is when the divorce was finalized.

Now it’s also interesting that Origen mentioned and pointed out that they weren’t able to stone people for “this or that sin”. You can almost see a symbolic gesture here with Jerusalem being the harlot and the stones falling upon her. According to Deuteronomy 22 this is what was supposed to happen to a woman who committed adultery. She was to be stoned. We see this in John 8:3-8.

And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

The reference to Moses is here. Deuteronomy 22:21, “Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.”

So symbolically speaking, the Temple being destroyed in 70 AD looks like a fulfillment of Deuteronomy 22:21 on a wider scale. Was Jerusalem literally stoned wth the stones of the Temple? I think so. Why not…they stoned the Messiah. I’ll get to that in the paper.

Bill of Divorce and Redemption

Now read this about the bill of divorce to beget understand why all this happened. What is it and why is it needed? And if you think that this is some shallow man/wife type of divorce then read on. This guy Eric Turner sums it up nicely.

“The House of Israel was given a certificate of divorce.

Jer 3:8 And I saw, when for all the causes for which backsliding Israel committed adultery, I sent her away and gave a bill of divorce to her, yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she went and whored, she also.

The Torah forbids her to remarry her husband once she has been defiled and divorced for adultery. Her first husband that she was divorced from has to die in order for that covenant to be broken.

Deu 24:1 When a man has taken a wife and married her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes, because he has found some uncleanness in her, then let him write her a bill of divorce and put it in her hand, and send her out of his house. 2 And when she has departed from his house, she goes and becomes another man’s; 3 and the latter husband hates her and writes her a bill of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house; or if the latter husband dies, he who took her to be his wife 4 her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after she is defiled. For that is hateful before Jehovah. And you shall not cause the land to sin, which Jehovah your God gives you for an inheritance.

YHVH could not legally remarry the House of Israel because she had gotten remarried to Pagan religion, so he had to come in the form of a man and die to break the covenant that he first gave to the House of Israel. He died to redeem the House of Israel from her adulteries by dying for her sins, specifically adultery. Paul teaches us this in Romans 7.

Rom 7:1 Or are you ignorant, brothers; for I SPEAK TO THOSE WHO KNOW THE LAW; that the law has dominion over a man AS LONG AS HE LIVES(Deut. 24)? 2 For the married woman was bound by law to the living husband. BUT IF THE HUSBAND DIES, she is set free FROM THE LAW OF HER HUSBAND(Not the Laws of Moses). 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she is married to another man, she shall be called an ADULTERESS(Deut. 24). But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no ADULTERESS by becoming another man’s wife. 4 So, my brothers, you also have become dead to the law(The law of adultery, Not the Laws of Moses) by the body of Christ so that you should be married to Another, even to Him raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit to God.

The very first verse states that he is only speaking to them that KNOW THE LAW. If you do not know the Torah/Law, you can’t understand what follows, but as you see, when you know the Torah/Law, you can see that Paul is by no means saying we are dead to the Torah/Laws of Moses, but from the penalties of ADULTERY(Which was mixing pagan customs with the worship of YHVH). HE HAD TO DIE TO REDEEM THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL from her adulteries. This is the greatest love story never told. This is exactly why Yeshua/Jesus says this.

Mat 15:24 But He answered and said, I am not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
